The organization began in the early 1990s as a pilot project under the National Trust for Historic Preservation. This Southern Middle Tennessee area, named as Tennessee's Backroads Heritage, was identified as an area that showcased "the best of the best" that Tennessee had to offer - Tennessee walking horses, major Distilleries and wineries, historical attractions, arts and culture and some of the best hiking east of the Rocky Mountains.
